Hello old chum! This is the third of an ongoing series of weekly (or, as best I can do) tabs for the colormeimpressed.com site. My name is J. Warden. As with all my tabs, this may be reproduced on any site as long as the above crap is kept intact. WORD! Well, some of us might remember my semi-smashing success at "cracking" Paul's CST (Common Stereo Tuning) with "Got You Down". And indeed, with my tuning and tabs one sounded just like the record. So I should of been able to rock out, quickly finish Stereo - Stereo, after the tuning was cracked, should be a piece of cake. Right? Wrong! The first time I noticed it was trying to do this "Dirt To Mud" tab. Oh sure, simply strumming the chords "C" and "F" sounded fairly accurate. But a careful listen to the song revealed note combinations which were impossible to play. The tuning sounded the same as the "Got You Down" tuning and watching him do both songs on the same guitar on video reinforced this. And then, playing with my tuning along with other songs, they became impossible too. Worse, his hands were doing things on video mine weren't even contemplating. The ballpark was getting messy. So I'm not infallible. AT LEAST I'M TRYING! After careful scrutiny, CAREFUL CAREFUL scrutiny of the Amoeba show, I think I got his tuning down. For real this time. I am going to warn you, it's fucked. It...it's a more natural sounding tuning, you can definitely see where Paul would invent this. But the fingerings are all over the map. Are you ready? Here we go: Low E: D# A: G# D: C G: D# B: G# E: C It's a major chord open tuning, but look where the thirds are!! Usually open tunings only have one third present, this has 2. This has MAJOR REPRECUSSIONS on where your fingers can go, and chords you can do. Paul not only pulls it off but plays it like a natural! It's awesome. So let's get started, enough of this preamble. We got the tuning (we think!) (we hope!) (sure we do!). What's the intro to "Dirt To Mud"? G# C# -0- -3- -0- -2- -0- -2- -3- -1- -0- -0- -x- -x- I know there's added tones, these are the "general" chords (like, the C# is a C#sus2 er somethin like that) There's one more chord, and that would be the D#. That would be: -0- -0- -2- -2- -2- -x- He does variations, timewise, of that introduction through the whole song.
