This song is fairly straightforward but the riffs themselves are really cool, and the arrangement is deceptive. One of my favourites to play on the guitar. Let's get started. The main riff of the song, the one it starts out on, is played differently by Bob and Paul. We'll call it the 'verse' riff because, that's what it entails. Paul's looks like this: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4---------2(ring)-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4------------------------------ -4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4---------2-------4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-------------- 2-------------- -2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2---------0-------2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2---------------2-------------- -----------------2-4-2-4-------------------------- 2-4-2-4-----0-------------- Bob's is thus: -------------------------5-(ring chord)--------------------------------------- -------------------------5------------------------------------------0--------- -------------------------6------------------------------------------9-------- -8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8---------7---------------8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8------------9-------- -8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-4-6-4-6-7---------------8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-4-6-4-6----7-------- -6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6---------5---------------6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6------------0------- Now, the TABS here are going to be pretty accurate, but I'm NOT vouching for the lyrics! Let's go: Saw your van on the sand and I don't understand Tell me why you do it cause you understand Look at where you're goin before you go insane Your pills and your booze and you're not the same Now, starting with the chorus Bob and Paul are playing two different parts - just on different areas of the neck. Paul doesn't like to go high on the neck while that's Bob's bread and butter. Paul: C# B E G D -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -3- -6- -4- -x- -x- -2- -6- -4- -2- -5- -0- -4- -2- -2- -5- -0- -x- -x- -0- -3- -x- Bob: C# B E G D -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -9- -12- -x- -x- -x- -9- -12- -x- -x- -x- -9- -12- -12- -11--9- -7- -10- -12- -9- -7- -0- -x- -10- C# B C# B E G Dope smokin moron don't make me yawn C# B C# B E G Dope smokin moron don't make me yawn C# B C# B E Dope smokin moron don't make me G Don't make me D B(Paul) Don't make me yawn After the first chorus, Paul stays on B for 4 bars (4 FAST bars, though) while Bob does this: ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- --2h4p2h4p2h4p2h4p2h4 (vibrato)--------------- ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- Then it's right back into the song: (Verse riff) I keep thinking wonderin why you do it to yourself You parents say you do it your way man you need help (verse riff) You're cruisin, you're losin it on the side Take this turn, keep doin it you're gonna die (then a standard chorus) C# B C# B E G Dope smokin moron don't make me yawn C# B C# B E G Dope smokin moron don't make me yawn C# B C# B E Dope smokin moron don't make me G Don't make me D B (2 bars) Don't make me yawn With the bridge starting HERE: G D (bass) MO - RON oh! And here starts a wondrously cool 16 bar instrumental bridge. Paul's part is simple support: -------------------------0-0-0-0- -------------------------0-0-0-0- -4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-2-2-2-2-1-1-1-1- -4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2- (repeat 4x) -2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-0-0-0-0-2-2-2-2- -x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-0-0-0-0- B A E Bob's part is where it gets COOL: ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ -2-4-5-4-2-4-5-4--2 (ring)--4b(6)4-- -2-4-5-4-2-4-5-4--2----------------- ------------------0----------------- ------------------------------------ The 4b(6)4 thing means to hit the 4th fret note, bend it so it sounds like the 6th fret note and then bend it back so it sounds like the normal note. Bob does this twice, the third time he goes: --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- -2-4-5-4-2-4-5-4--2 (ring)--2^^^^(vibrato)-0- -2-4-5-4-2-4-5-4--2-------------------------- ------------------0-------------------------- --------------------------------------------- The genius of Stinson - he takes that B and wiggles it around a lot. There may also be a slight pinch harmonic happening, I'm not sure. Argh! But then the fourth time he does the riff, he does it like he did No.1&2 Then the explosion! Paul: D C Bb C# B -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -7- -5- -3- -6- -4- -7- -5- -3- -6- -4- -5- -3- -1- -4- -2- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- Bob: D C Bb C# -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -12- -10- -8- -11- -12- -10- -8- -11- -10- -8- -6- -9- D C D C DOPE SMOK-IN MO-RON Bb C# DON'T MAKE ME YAWN Then Paul plays the B chord for16 bars...while Bob pulls out a little sting. -------------------------------------------------------- --------7-------7-----------7--9-7-9-7------------------------------ 9b(11)-------9b(11)--9b(11)------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------9-7-9-7----7-9(vibrato)-- -------------------------------------------9-7-9-7--9--- ------------------------------------------------------- Then the part we all love, over Mars' drums: Hey, Merle, I was wonderin'... if ya had any 'ludes on ya? Then after that we just do a half-verse like normal (just 1 verse riff) ??? You gotta go ??? you gotta know! Then one final chorus, except on the "yawn" part you don't play a B, you play an A Paul Bob -0- -x- -2- -x- -2- -x- -2- -7- -0- -7- -x- -5-
