This song is really really simple, but there's still that pesky Common Stereo Tuning to contend with. The differences are so subtle...I tried to play this in standard, open G, and open E and found CST the only way to get the partials going EXACTLY as I hear them in the verses. You'll see what I mean, but actually you can whip this off sounding 95 percent like the record with any tuning you want. Low E: D# A: G# D: C G: D# B: G# E: C You can tune your guitar easily to this tuning by doing the following: 1) Tune your high E so it matches the C on the B string (1st fret) 2) Tune your b so it matches the G# on the G string (1st fret) 3) Tune your G so it matches the D# on the D string (1st fret) 4) Tune the top 3 (low E to D) so they are an octave below the bottom 3. That is low e->octave below G string; a string->octave below B string; D string->octave below high E string Now, put your CAPO ON THE SECOND FRET and here we go!! There's two guitars during this, the rhythm guitar is doing a simple F-G riff on the low E string for the verses. Assuming your guitar is still in CST, it's just -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -0-0-2-0---0-0-2-0-- putting a slight bend on that 2 to make it raunchy. Now let's look at the verse, with the 'lead' guitar playing what we'll term THE DIESEL RIFF: -------------------3--x--------- -------------------2--2--------- -------------------0--4--------- -------------------3--3--------- -------------------2--2--------- -------------------0--0--------- I'm a dirty diesel ---------------------3--x--------- ---------------------2--2--------- ---------------------0--4--------- ---------------------3--3--------- ---------------------2--2--------- ---------------------0--0--------- Pumping down the line ----------------------3--x--------- ----------------------2--2--------- ----------------------0--4--------- ----------------------3--3--------- ----------------------2--2--------- ----------------------0--0--------- Hear my whistle blowing ---------------3------3------------------ ---------------0------0------------------ ---------------0------0------------------ ---------------3------3------------------ ---------------0------0------------------ ----------------------2------------------ Hear my engine whine ..then it goes back into the DIESEL RIFF, and back into the verse. The part with Well, you may not know it By looking at your only dead man Is just playing that C over it -3- -0- -0- -3- -0- --- And that's the song, save for all of Paul's tasty leads, which I don't do anymore. That's it, brotherman!
