I mean, REALLY maligned. Two songs that people hate the most from Westerberg's solo stuff are this one and "Silver Naked Ladies" (judging from usenet discussions over the years) and I don't get it..I love those songs! Anyway, here comes the science - This song has 2 guitars, one in open A and one in standard tuning that just comes in once inawhile - notably over the bridge, as well as doing a REAL COOL funky solo. If you think I'm gonna transcribe that solo, think again, friend. I'm just gonna concentrate on the main, riff-y open A guitar. "Open A?? Wha? This song is in C#! Why would he write it in open A?" - good question. There's hardly any open strings in this song, but when they hit they hit good...well, you'll see. Intro and the verses all start out with the IV-V signature progression of this song. F# and G#, in layman's terms. He plays 'em jangly, with the horns - in fact, I'm sure the partials on here are where he got the horn part: F# G# -4------4--------------- -4------4--------------- -4------6--------------- -6------4--------------- -4------6--------------- -------(4)-------------- Notice something about them? No root note! The bass is playing the root note, and I bet that's when Paul got the idea of the trombone also pushing the actual F#-G# slide.... So the song starts out with F#-G#-F#-G# instrumental (a bar each, played fast&jangly) and then F# Good substitute for inspiration G# Prostitutes and perspiration F# G# Look don't touch F# I thank you all for showing me G# Exactly what I don't want to be F# G# Here that much The 2 verse chords (he FINALLY gets around to the tonic! but in conjunction with the dropped 3rd!) are played thusly: E C# --0--------------- --3--------------- --2-------4------- --0-------4------- --2-------4------- --0--------------- E Fast jump Everybody shouting C# Come together E Fast jump C# Everybody punch up the air E Fast jump Everybody bummer C# Here comes a sucker E Fast jump When you gonna blow C# Up a square Are we cool? Then there's a second verse, with a second chorus. Followed by a third verse (with a third chorus). The third verse is where the 2nd guitar enters. It's in standard tuning and plays the F#-G# like this F# G# -x--x---- -2--1---- -3--1---- -4--1---- -x--x---- -x--x---- Oh yeah, I said I wasn't gonna do that part... And then - dear god, I kid you not - the best, most clever bridge of the 90s! C# Bbminor B E ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --6------------------6--------------6------2---------------------------------------- --4------------------4--------------4------0---------------------------------------- --4------------------4--------------4------2---------------------------------------- --4------------------6--------------7------0---------------------------------------- I give the world the slip - can you dig my trumpet clip Do that 2x, gently raking from low to high. Then it gets rowdier --4------------------4--------------4------4---------------------------------------- --4------------------4--------------4------3---------------------------------------- --6------------------6--------------6------2---------------------------------------- --4------------------4--------------x------0---------------------------------------- --4------------------4--------------x------2---------------------------------------- --x------------------6--------------7------0---------------------------------------- I give the world the slip - can you dig my trumpet clip You play that 2x with the full 'jangle jangle' rhythm on the higher strings. VERY CLEVER WITH THAT E CHORD, EH? Then it just plays a simple C# for 2 bars (with the last quarter silent) while he goes "oh my trumpet clip" and then "and I'm" A -0- -0- -0- -0- -0- -0- HIGH! For ten freakin' bars! Here's the open A! Before I finish the song (almost there), I mean, look at that bridge. C#, Bbminor, Bmajor, E. Look at those chords! Those are crazy chords. If you went to a piano and played them right now and tried to make a convincing melody overtop, you'd fail. I mean, most people would fail. Goes to show that Paul can write the simple-but-amazing songs, sure, but he can also get chord-smithy with the best of 'em when he feels like it. Anyway, the song continues - verse 4, chorus 4 (which is a guitar solo instrumental chorus) then an F#-G# and then ends with an F#, then E (play like the E in the bridge, with the 4th fret of the high e string) and then a simple C#. When I've been saying "simple C#" I mean just play the 4th fret on the A, D and G strings, not jangly. You listen to the song and you can tell what's going on. He uses those strings for PUNCH!
